Introduction In 2018 the Department of Defense (DoD) for the United States of America announced a 10-year 10 billion dollar plan to update all IT related infrastructure and systems. This proposal, the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, would unite all branches of the DoD’s IT needs into one unified system.1 Both Amazon and Microsoft, two of the largest cloud computing companies in the U.S., both put in bids for the contract with the DoD. Despite Amazon being seen as the industry leader and developing the CIA’s cloud computing systems, Microsoft won the contract. The decision of the DoD has come under scrutiny as President Trump has attacked Amazon’s CEO, Jeff Bezos, on social media. Additionally, the former Defense Secretary Jam Mattis claims that President Trump “wanted to foil Amazon and give the contract to another company.”2 Amazon is still looking to use non-market strategy to win back the contract from Microsoft. Description of Company Microsoft, founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975, is a multinational technology company in the United States, and the world’s leading PC (Personal Computer) software developer. The company mainly researches and develops, manufactures, licenses and provides a wide range of computer software services business. Amazon Corporation, founded by Jeff Bezos in 1995, is the largest online e-commerce company in the United States, located in Seattle, Washington. It was one of the earliest companies to start e-commerce. At present, Amazon has expanded to a wide range of services, including cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence. Description of Strategic Problem Within the Pentagon, some believe one company should win the JEDI contract; however, others see the JEDI as a task needing collaboration among industry leaders. Despite these views, several competing companies, seeing Amazon as a leader in cloud computing, believed they deserved the project. Amazon, however, lost the contract to Microsoft. After comments from former defense secretary, Jame Mattis, Amazon feels that the President's vendetta against Jeff Bezos may have played a role in the DoD choosing Microsoft.3 Amazon needs to develop a strategy to delay or win back the JEDI contract. Appealing directly to the DoD will not work as they have already made a decision. Additionally, Congress has already approved the DoD budget and cannot intervene. Lastly, the executive branch of government will most likely actively work against Amazon, as the head of this branch is the President. Planned outline and structure of your final paper ? ?
